Special Instructions for Physicians Applying to Practice in Australia

Special Instructions

ECFMG, a division of Intealth, partners with the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to primary-source verify the medical credentials of internationally educated physicians applying for registration to practice medicine in Australia. If you are a graduate of a medical institution located outside of Australia, and you wish to apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia or for specialist assessment by an Australian specialist medical college, you will need to have all required medical credentials verified through EPIC as part of your application.

To have your credentials verified through EPIC in support of an application for registration or for specialist assessment by an Australian specialist medical college, you must complete the following steps:

Step 1 – Use AMC’s Self-check of Eligible Schools to determine if the medical institution that issued your primary qualification (Final Medical Diploma) is recognized by the AMC.

Step 2 – Establish a MyIntealth Account.

For information on establishing a MyIntealth Applicant Portal account, see the Online Services Overview. Establishing your MyIntealth account will include confirming your identity with ECFMG, a division of Intealth. Once your MyIntealth account is fully established, which means you have a valid Intealth Identification Form (IIF) on file and have been issued a MyIntealth ID, you can submit a request to establish an EPIC Portfolio.

Step 3 – Log in to your MyIntealth account and submit a request to establish an EPIC Portfolio.

To request an EPIC Portfolio, log in to MyIntealth, select “Services” in the main navigation, and then select “EPIC” from the drop-down menu. In the EPIC section, click the “Credential Verification” tab. Then, click the “Establish EPIC Portfolio” button to begin your request. Select the Australian Medical Council as the organization to which you are applying.

Step 4 – Once your EPIC Portfolio is established, upload the required credentials (qualifications) and nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report for each credential (qualification).

If you are applying for the Standard Pathway (AMC examinations) or Competent Authority Pathway, the credential to submit for verification is:

  • Final Medical Diploma (or primary qualification, e.g., MBBS, etc.)

If you are applying for specialist assessment purposes, the credentials to submit for verification are:

  • Final Medical Diploma (or primary qualification, e.g., MBBS, etc.)
  • Postgraduate and Specialist qualification(s). Please enquire with the respective Australian specialist medical college to find out which qualification(s) require verification before adding postgraduate qualification(s) to your EPIC Portfolio or the AMC portfolio.

Important Notes on Credentials Verified through EPIC

Primary Qualifications
If you are submitting a Final Medical School Transcript or Alternate Graduation Document as your primary qualification, AHPRA may also require you to submit verification of your Final Medical Diploma when you apply for registration. If you are required to submit verification of your Final Medical Diploma, you will incur additional costs from both the AMC and ECFMG.

Specialist Qualifications
If your qualification is issued by the General Medical Council, the Certificate of Completion of Training or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration are the only documents the AMC will accept. This must be a copy of the actual certificate and verified as a Specialist Qualification.

Medical Registrations / Licenses to Practice Medicine
Although ECFMG will primary-source verify Medical Registrations/Licenses to Practice Medicine, verification of this credential will not be accepted by the AMC in lieu of your Final Medical Diploma (primary qualification) verification. It is also not an AHPRA requirement to have Medical Registrations/Licenses to Practice Medicine verified through EPIC.

Certificates of Good Standing
It is required that Certificates of Registration Status/Good Standing be sent directly to AHPRA by the respective registration authority. Verification through EPIC of a Medical Registration/License to Practice Medicine or a Certificate of Good Standing will not substitute for this purpose. Please refer to AHPRA for requirements regarding this document.

For more information on the credentials verified through EPIC, see Using EPIC.

Please note: It is very important that you nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report for each required credential, as you upload it. If you do, the AMC will be notified when the credential is sent for verification and an EPIC Report will be automatically sent to the AMC when the credential is verified. If you do not nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report on a credential at the time you upload it, you will be required to send an EPIC Report to the AMC once the credential is verified.

Step 5 – Make note of your MyIntealth ID (and EPIC ID, if one was previously issued).

Your MyInteath ID (and EPIC ID, if one was previously issued) can be found on the “Identity Information” tab in the “My Profile” section of MyIntealth.

Note: By providing your MyIntealth ID (and EPIC ID, if one was previously issued to you) to the AMC, you authorize the AMC and ECFMG to exchange your personal information in order to confirm your identity and verify the authenticity of your submitted qualifications. Please see the Intealth Privacy Notice for additional information.

Step 6 – Establish your AMC portfolio .

Once AMC receives notification that your credentials have been sent for verification through EPIC, the AMC qualifications portal will be updated to be accessed by AHPRA for registration purposes and the respective Australian specialist medical college(s) for assessment purposes.

Step 7 – Ensure EPIC Reports on your verified credentials (qualifications) have been sent to the AMC.

If you nominated the AMC to receive an EPIC Report when a credential was uploaded, that report will be sent to the AMC automatically once the credential is verified.

If you did not nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report at the time you uploaded the credential, you will need to log in to your MyIntealth Account, select “Services” in the main navigation, and then select “EPIC” from the drop-down menu. In the EPIC section, select the “EPIC Reports” tab, and then click the “Request an EPIC Report” button. Then, select the credential for which you are requesting a report from your list of verified credentials. Be sure to select Australian Medical Council from the "Report Recipient" search results when sending your report.

About Applying to the Australian Medical Council (AMC)

1. I am applying to the Medical Board of Australia for registration; do I need to use EPIC?

International medical graduates applying for registration to the Medical Board of Australia need to establish an EPIC Portfolio in MyIntealth and have their credentials (qualifications) primary-source verified through EPIC.

2. I am applying to an Australian specialist college for assessment; do I need to use EPIC?

International medical graduates applying to an Australian specialist medical college for assessment need to establish an EPIC Portfolio and have their credentials (qualifications) primary-source verified through EPIC.

3. I’ve already submitted an application to the AMC and all of my credentials (qualifications) required by the AMC have been verified through EICS; do I need to use EPIC?

No. Credentials primary-source verified through EICS for the AMC by June 30, 2017 do not need to be resubmitted through EPIC. Those credentials have already been sent directly to the AMC and your AMC records have been updated accordingly. However, if you have additional credentials that you would like to provide to the AMC, you will need to use EPIC to submit those credentials.

Please note that if you do establish an EPIC Portfolio in MyIntealth, any credentials that have already been verified through EICS will be added to your EPIC Portfolio, along with any credentials that you may have had verified by ECFMG for ECFMG Certification. Once you submit your request for an EPIC Portfolio, ECFMG will review your Intealth record, typically within 10 business days, for credentials that have been previously primary-source verified; and if your file is acceptable, ECFMG will add your previously verified qualifications to your EPIC Portfolio.

4. Which credentials (qualifications) do I need to submit to the AMC through EPIC?

For the Standard Pathway (AMC examinations) and Competent Authority Pathway, submit your Final Medical Diploma (or primary qualification, e.g., MBBS, etc.) for verification.

For specialist assessment purposes, your Final Medical Diploma and postgraduate qualification(s) must be submitted. Enquire with the respective Australian specialist medical college to find out which postgraduate qualification(s) require verification before adding postgraduate qualification(s) to your EPIC Portfolio or the AMC portfolio.

5. How far in advance of applying for registration to the AMC do I need to upload my credentials (qualifications) to EPIC?

We recommend that you start the EPIC verification process as soon as possible after you have decided to apply to the AMC. Through EPIC, your credentials are verified directly with the issuing institution. The time required to complete the verification of credentials varies and depends on a number of factors, including the time it takes for the issuing institution to respond to our verification requests.

About Using EPIC

1. Will I have access to my medical credentials (qualifications) after I apply to the AMC?

Yes. The credentials that you upload to EPIC through MyIntealth remain available to you as part of your EPIC Portfolio. You can use EPIC to send copies of these credentials along with reports verifying their authenticity to organizations worldwide at any time throughout your career.

2. Will credentials (qualifications) that I upload to EPIC after I complete my application to the AMC be sent to the AMC?

Credentials that you upload to EPIC are not automatically sent to the AMC, whether you upload them before completing your application to the AMC or after. In order to send a credential to the AMC, you must request an EPIC Report for that credential be sent to the AMC. You can either request an EPIC Report for the AMC as you upload the credential or from the "EPIC Reports" tab in the EPIC section of your MyIntealth account after your credential has been verified.

3. How do I know if the AMC received the verification report and copy of my credential?

Once a report is sent to the AMC, the AMC will be able to access it through the secure MyIntealth Entity Portal and update your AMC records accordingly. If you need to confirm whether the AMC has accessed your reports, please contact the AMC . Allow 3-5 business days for the AMC to update its qualifications portal.

4. Can I select (nominate) the AMC to receive EPIC Reports only once, or should I do it for every credential individually?

For each credential that you upload, you will need to nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report. You can request each report at the time that you upload each credential.

If you did not nominate the AMC to receive an EPIC Report at the time you uploaded a credential, you will need to log in to your MyIntealth account and request an EPIC Report for the AMC.

5. Do I need to use EPIC when applying to the AMC if my credentials (qualifications) have already been verified by ECFMG for a purpose other than applying to the AMC?

If your credentials have already been primary-source verified by ECFMG for ECFMG Certification or through ECFMG’s International Credentials Services (EICS) for a medical regulatory authority other than the AMC, you will still need to establish an EPIC Portfolio in MyIntealth and provide your credentials and verification reports to the AMC. However, you will not need to upload the credentials that were previously verified by ECFMG; they will be added to your EPIC Portfolio. Simply log in to your MyIntealth account, select “Services” in the main navigation, and then select “EPIC” from the drop-down menu. In the EPIC section, click the “Credential Verification” tab. Then, click the “Establish EPIC Portfolio” button to begin your request. Once you submit your request for an EPIC Portfolio, ECFMG will review your Intealth record, typically within 10 business days, for credentials that have been previously primary-source verified; and if your file is acceptable, ECFMG will add your previously verified qualifications to your EPIC Portfolio. After your qualification is added to your EPIC Portfolio, log in to your MyIntealth account and request an EPIC Report for the AMC.

6. If I have questions or problems regarding EPIC, should I contact ECFMG or the AMC?

If you have questions regarding EPIC’s services—such as establishing an EPIC Portfolio, , uploading your credentials (qualifications), managing your portfolio, the verification process, sending verification reports, or fees—please contact us.

If you have questions regarding applying to the AMC—such as necessary documentation, required qualifications, or assessment pathways—please contact the AMC .
